Classroom Conduct Expectations
1. Be RESPECTFUL of:
· the band room
· the teacher
· other people
· instruments
Know when others are talking in front of the whole group and DO NOT talk when others are speaking. All students must be quiet when not playing.
- Be RESPONSIBLE by:
· attending all rehearsals
· bringing your instrument, band book, binder, and pencil
· completing and returning homework (practice & written)
· cleaning and putting away your instrument and reeds properly
Not allowed in the band room: gum, candy, soda pop, or any other food or drink. Do not put any of these items in your instruments cases. Water in spill-proof containers (water bottles) is allowed, if used responsibly.
- Be READY TO LEARN by:
· being attentive
· being in your seat with your music book and pencil on the music stand, ready to play when class starts
· being ready to play at all times
Disruptive students will be given a warning and an opportunity to change their behavior. If the behavior continues, the student will lose points. After points have been deducted three times, the student will be separated from the group, and will be required to complete a written assignment about the problem. The band teacher will discuss the assignment with the student after class. Additional written assignments relating to the band curriculum may also be given, to be completed during class, and finished at home, if necessary. Chronic problems will be dealt with according to the school policy.
Concerts and Concert Attire
Students will perform an evening concert in fall &/or winter and in spring. Other concerts or performance opportunities may also be possible. Notice will be given as soon as these dates are determined. Each student is an important part of the band ensemble. Attendance at concerts is required. A written note in advance is required if a student is not able to attend a concert.
Concert attire: black long pants
white long-sleeved dress shirt
solid black shoes and socks
(Concert attire is required for Marvista & North Hill. Beverly Park & White Center Heights do not have a required dress code this year; however, they should dress up for the event.)
Students should come as close as possible to the concert attire. Families are not required to purchase new clothing if the student does not already have the concert attire. However, if you decide to purchase clothing, keep in mind that this is the same as the required concert attire at most middle schools. You may wish to leave some growing room so the clothes can be used for as long as possible.
Homework Assignments
Homework assignments will be given weekly (occasionally bi-weekly.) Homework consists of practice assignments and a written assignment (may be on a separate paper, or may be listed under "Music Theory" on the weekly homework/practice sheet.) In addition to specific practice exercises and a space to record minutes practiced, weekly announcements will be included on the practice assignment sheet. The practice portion of the homework assignments can be sent to parents by e-mail. The written assignments will usually only be available in class. The written assignment will often be followed up by an extension activity in class. Therefore it is important that the assignment be completed by the date due. Students are not expected to practice if they are ill or on an out of town trip, etc. However, they should resume a regular practice routine as soon as possible.
Instrument Rental
There are advantages to renting an instrument from a music store. Renting to own allows most of your rental fees to apply towards the purchase of the instrument. Rental plans often offer repair plans and damage/theft insurance. Instruments can be rented over the summer, allowing students to practice before the next school year. Please see the list of local music stores in the information packet sent home on the first day of band. Standard American brands (as well as Yamaha) of instruments will withstand many years of playing with proper maintenance. If you have any questions about acceptable brands of instruments, please ask the band director. A limited number of school instruments may be available. A $30 non-refundable fee is required.
Instruments borrowed from the school or school district must be returned in June. If you are changing schools or moving, you must return the instrument before you move. Special arrangements may be possible for students who sign up for Summer Band. Please use the instrument carefully, and do not allow anyone else to play the instrument. Remember you (the parent) are responsible for any loss or damage.
