Marvista:  Tuesday / Friday

North Hill:  5th = Tuesday / Friday, 6th grade = Tuesday/Wednesday

Progress reports will be sent home with report cards.  If you do not receive a progress report with the report card, or if you have any questions about the progress report, please contact Mrs. Brown.

Most school bands will perform at the PAC at least once during the school year.

Driving directions to the PAC:  The Highline Performing Arts Center (PAC) is located at 401 S. 152nd Street in Burien.  From 1st Ave. S., go East on 152nd Street.  You will cross over the Burien Freeway (509.)  Highline High School will be on your right.  The PAC is on your right, just after the high school.  There are parking lots on both sides of the street.

Middle School Registration (takes place in spring)

Sixth grade students who would like to take band in middle school next year (and we hope that will be all of you!) need to list band as their first choice under electives, in order to be sure to be placed in the band.  If you have already turned in your registration, you should be able to change your elective to band (or change the band you will take) at the start of the school year.

At Cascade, Chinook, & Sylvester, students should sign up for the 7th grade band.

Students going to Pacific have three bands to consider joining.  The Concert Band is open to all students, and is a beginning level band.  This is a good band for students who want to begin a new instrument, or who want to join band for the first time.  It is also a good option for students who would like a review of book one before moving on to more challenging music.  The Symphonic Band is the group most incoming 7th grade students go into, and it requires a basic audition, which you can play for your sixth grade band teacher.  The Wind Ensemble has 8th grade students, and some advanced 7th grade students.  This group competes at band contests, and takes a trip to an out of state (often California) band contest each spring.  If you would like to audition for this group, please talk to Mrs. Brown.

The audition materials are as follows:

Symphonic Band = Essential Elements 2000 Book One, p. 38, 40, & 41

Wind Ensemble = Essential Elements 2000 Book Two, p. 34 - 37, & p. 40

Summer Band

The Highline School District Summer Band Program is a great way for students to have fun playing their instruments, and to improve their musical skills over the summer.  It is also possible to begin a new instrument.  Attendance is not required for the entire session, as we realize many families have vacations, camps, or other plans during the summer.  Please ask Mrs. Brown for a registration form in the spring.  The district appreciates advance registration, so we know if there is enough enrollment for the program.  Here are the details:

Dates:

Days & times:  10:00 AM - 12:00 Noon, Monday - Friday, with the final concert on Saturday morning

Location:

Cost:  $65, cash or check payable to Highline School District (you may pay when you register, or on the first day of the program)

Who may participate?  All students who have completed 5th - 7th grade band may participate in the Concert Band; any student in grades 5 - 12 may participate in Swap Band (learning a new instrument,) and grades 8 - 12 may participate in the Jazz Band (8:00 - 10:00 AM.)  Students do not have to attend school in Highline School District in order to participate.

Extra Credit:

Students may earn extra credit in many different ways.  Each week, specific extra credit suggestions are listed on the homework/practice assignment sheet.  Students doing extra credit should record what extra credit they did that week on the homework/practice sheet.  Students will receive "Band Bucks" for points earned in class and on homework and extra credit.  These may be used to "purchase" items and privileges.

In addition to the weekly extra credit, students may earn extra credit by attending band or orchestra concerts or performances which include a musician performing on an instrument that is part of the school band.  See the calendar for suggested concerts to attend in the community.  (These are separate from the school performances in which your child will participate.)

Students may also earn extra credit for taking weekly private lessons.  A list of local teachers is available upon request.
