Bravo to HHS marching band for a great year

The Hammonton High School Blue Devils marching band reached new heights this year. The 40-member ensemble finished second in the Group I Open class at the Northeastern Band Championship in Allentown Pa. That performance earned the group its first-ever berth in the United States Scholastic Band Association National Championship.

The Blue Devils rose to the occasion and took fourth place in their class at the competition, held Friday at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md. For that -- and for the band's success all year -- we offer a resounding Bravo!

Marching bands don't often get the recognition they deserve, both in school and in the community. Their prime season overlaps with that of high school football and other fall sports, which often enjoy most of the glory. But band members work incredibly hard, starting with mid-summer practices that are essential to help the group perfect its field show. The rehearsals intensify during the school year, and weekend schedules rapidly fill up with tournaments, halftime performances and parades.

First-year band director Kevin Arena -- a Hammonton High School graduate -- should be commended for his ability to teach, motivate and inspire the group.

Band members should be applauded for their dedication, commitment and desire -- all of which allowed the Blue Devils to improve their scores each week and make history for Hammonton's music program.

They've represented their school, and their town, very well.

If you didn't see the band on the field this year, you may get one more chance. Members hope to perform before the Hammonton-St. Joseph football game on Nov. 28.

They'll also participate in the fire department's annual Christmas parade on Dec. 13.

So go hear some great music, cheer them on and congratulate them on a job well done.

Hey guys, congratulations so far on a season well played; you guys overcame the hardships and obstacles you faced last year, and you did so with flying colors.  All of us Alumni are proud of you guys and what you've accomplished, and I look forward to hearing good things about your last performance of the year; I really have no idea when the last time the band went to Nationals was, so it's up to you guys to show the rest of those guys how we do things in H-Town.  Good luck, god speed, and have fun!                                                                                                    D.J. DeFiccio, Class of 2007

I want to say congratulations for being State Champs! I'm really glad you guys have done so well this season and I want to wish you the best of luck this weekend! It's funny to think about, how when all the seniors graduated, so many people said, "What are we going to do?" You obviously did one step better than us and brought your A game. I'm so proud of you guys and I wish I was able to see you guys perform. Tell the entire band that I miss them and when I'm marching with my band I think of Hammonton in every step. Everything you learn there carries on farther than you really would expect, not only in marching, but in the outside world. I sound really corny and cliche now, but whatever, I'm old and retired. lol. Just remember that you're beast and no one can tell you other. *that implies not only yourself but the entire band.* I just wanted to say I'm so proud of you guys for this season, and returners I'm proud of you for going through multiple years of confusion and hardship and still progressing like champs. No matter how big the band is, Hammonton will always be the greatest band around. I love and miss you all!                                                               Lou, Class of 2008
