Randy Dunn performs frequently throughout the greater Houston area, working both as a free lance trumpet player and as a music coordinator and contractor. In a career as a professional musician that has extended beyond twenty years, he has performed at hundreds of weddings, church services (traditional sacred and contemporary), corporate events (grand openings, banquets, awards ceremonies, fanfares, parties, new product introductions, opening ceremonies, etc.), festivals, graduation ceremonies, birthday parties, private parties and celebrations, fundraisers, funerals, social events, recording sessions, sporting events, and concerts.
Mr. Dunn has appeared with many of Houston's greatest performing groups, performing at virtually every major performance venue in the Houston area, including Jones Hall, Wortham Theater Center, Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, and Miller Theater. As a free lance professional trumpeter he has worked for Houston Grand Opera, Theater Under the Stars, Hits Unicorn Theater Orchestra, Conroe Concert Chorale Orchestra, Texas Renaissance Festival, Texas Brass Ensemble, Sam Houston State University (faculty) Brass Quintet, Chamber Music Unlimited, WellSpring Music, and many other outstanding performing ensembles. Mr. Dunn is also the founder and director of several musical ensembles, including the Windscape Brass Ensemble, the Bayou City Brass Ensemble, and the Bayou City Fanfare Trumpets.
Mr. Dunn received his advanced musical training primarily at the Moores School of Music, University of Houston, where he studied with James Austin, former principal trumpet with the Houston Symphony Orchestra. After earning his Bachelor of Music degree, Mr. Dunn also completed graduate level music coursework at the Moores School, at Texas Christian University (Fort Worth), and at Towson State University (Maryland). Although Mr. Dunn is primarily a classically trained musician, he has performed with many pop, dance, latin, and jazz ensembles in addition to his numerous performances with classical music ensembles and as a classical trumpet soloist.
Mr. Dunn performs on trumpets in all keys, including the standard Bb trumpet, the C, D, & Eb trumpets, the A & Bb piccolo trumpet (the smallest one--with a very high, bright, brilliant sound), the herald trumpet (the extremely long one with a banner or flag hanging from it--played by heralding trumpeteers and associated with royal entrance fanfares), the flugelhorn (the large relative of the trumpet that has a dark, mellow sound), and the cornet (the relative of the trumpet that has a very warm sound.)
For most performances and events, Mr. Dunn and the members of his musical ensembles perform in standard formal wear dress (tuxedos or suits, etc., as specified by the client.) When performing at theme events, upon request by the client, Mr. Dunn and his musical ensemble members sometimes also perform wearing Rennaisance or other historical or theme costumes.
